With a relatively modest budget of $37 million, he made a classic heist flick thats well, porn for New Englanders: the heavy Boston accents; the scene in a Dunkin Donuts; and, oh yeah, the fact that a crew of robbers takes down Fenway Park. Its this movie and its already got a script. They were about to buy it but they wanted to cut it, too. When Doug wakes Jem up in the middle of the night to do some damage and ask no questions, the only thing his friend wants to know is which car they should take. If they get popped, they do the time. Its called The Hurt Locker. The only thing that I had seen of him was the Jeffrey Dahmer movie, which couldnt have been more different from what I wanted. Affleck: My favorite moment in the movie, cinematically, came directly from a conversation I had with a guy who was in MCI-Norfolk at the time. Hall: It was like being alongside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in London. Hes not someone that blends in easily. Douggie, played by Affleck, is a man trying not to die on the street he was born. Ill tell you what Im gonna do. And so we were a little bit extra, extra respectful. The movies center is Charlestown, right across the bridge from the rest of Boston, a legend in illicit locales. It just read like a good old-fashioned, kind of 70s cop movie, where the good guys are the bad guys and the bad guys are the good guys. I showed up, I did the reading. Ill do that., My place in Connecticut is only three hours from Boston, so I just, on a whim, jumped in the car, drove up to Boston, went to the production office and walked in, and David Crockett, one of the producers, and Chay were like, Hey, what are you doing? And I said to Chay, Oh, Im Detective such and such. And she was like, You fucker. I said, Is he here? And she said, Yeah, hes down doing auditions downstairs., I kind of slipped in and waited in line and then said to the production assistant, Dont say my name. If the criminal culture that The Town associated with Charlestowns Irish-Catholic working-class community ever existed, it had dwindled away with the neighbourhoods traditional residents. His first reaction is to take her out of the equation.. Besides being the lovable and erudite wrinkle in the scheme, she is not a townie, someone who was raised in the neighborhood. Affleck also embarked on a series of interviews with locals, including convicted robbers and members of the FBI violent crimes force. Thousands. They ran mass auditions of up to 1,000 people at a time, Affleck recalls. Its like 50 percent of why people buy tickets. And I thought, Not only is she the best actress for the part, shes gonna be able to really surprise people.. So I read this new version of the script. Or why Affleck hired him to play a Charlestown bank robber in his new movie The Town.. First of all, it was about 20 pages shorter. But mostly a Boston accent depends on your socioeconomic status, by and large. But the Red Sox were definitely in the spirit of, This is gonna be fun. The Town was initially supposed to end with Doug paying for his sins with his life. And so I think at first we were sort of like, Oh, how can we not be Heat? And at some point we said, Look, embrace Heat. An earlier version of this piece misspelled Roslindale. This is the script I want. And I said, Adrian, this is gonna be a three-and-a-half-hour movie. Hes like, Well, if Scorsese can make a three-and-a-half-hour movie, I want to.. Affleck gives the gang its last hurrah on-screen. It included a mastermind, a distraction, a partner, a coordinator, a backer, hacker, con man, and gadget guy. Burke: There were the most narrow streets you could find in the North End. And Blake spent some time with her. Ben wasnt in Boston. Just because the echo in the ballpark. Craig: [Jeff] Robinov, [the president] at Warners, really wanted to make the movie. So I was thrilled. I wasnt really in the movie world. Slaine: I think he was just really going for authenticity. Theres two ways that this can go. Ben Affleck (director/star): He had an adaptation that was very, very different and it was really focused on the love story. Its something Ive seen other directors do. Affleck unequivocally contributed to that proliferation. So many broke the code, shattered the code. That would be the equivalent of approximately $5 million today. Thats the one moment that gives you a glimpse into how damaged and how profoundly broken Jem is. Good God, some of them may still be there today. But it couldnt be Bruins. Affleck: He played that so deftly, and made that scene work so well, when hes sort of smiling and laughing, but theres so much menace underneath it. But instead, Affleck went with something more bittersweet. Upon his exit, the bank employees activated And a lot of older actors, [when theyre] told, Go here, do this, a lot of these guys are like, Fuck off. Even with the shorter length hes afforded, Affleck tells multiple stories. And I just came over to him and I was biting my tongue. Its kind of like a safety thing. R Thriller Drama Crime Movie 2010. hd. Craig: Adrian was at this really ambitious double-album phase of his career, and he didnt want to cut anything. Hes like, What the fuck are you doing? Affleck: I was able to get access to the FBI and the division that chased and caught most of these armored car robbers, particularly in Charlestown. I was still in the 70s mindset of, Oh thats how you end one of these movies. So he uses them in that way. Affleck: Hockeys such a big thing in Charlestown. Affleck: There have been a lot more New York city movies than there have Boston, for sure. At heart, its a story of social mobility. Id go sit in Fenway and be the only guy there. The bank robbers step out of their vehicle. He heard stories about Charlestowns reputation for bank robberies and its strict code of silence. The cunning group is robbing city banks to steal money and making the getaway with diamond Heist. And so they said they had this script based on this book, and I said, OK, let me look at it. I read the adaptation, and it had been developed by Adrian Lyne, who I just worked with. But not everyone was happy with the image of Charlestown given toa generation of moviegoers. The North End, Bostons Little Italy, is one of the citys smallest, densest, oldest neighborhoods; the asymmetrical Fenway Park, which fits snugly on a single block, is picturesque but impossibly cramped. And I was like, Who the hell is this guy? [Through a representative, Renner declined to be interviewed for this article.]. When I saw it, I thought, Its fine. I wound up learning a lot from how Ben did that. Cooper: He got me about five [recorded] voices and one in particularthis one of somebody who had done timewas just so full of character and I just loved it, and so thats what I glommed onto. This really happened it was described to Affleck by a man serving time. And they told us all these stories, and all these fascinating things, and built up what this mythology was. And I was talking to people right next to him. And that was really thrilling to respond to. The Friends of Eddie Coyle starred Robert Mitchum in the title role and Peter Boyle as a hitman who ran a bar. Welliver: When we were doing The Town is when he was up for the role of Hawkeye. "Ben Affleck Played Me". All they see are yuppies. A Boston bank robber looks for a way out of his criminal lifestyle after beginning a passionate romance with the woman that his gang briefly took hostage. And I still am. Numerous career bank robbers threw in the towel and testified in this trial, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Connolly said at a news conference at the time. It was kind of a moment for them. Afflecks Doug MacRay, the leader of the gang, is the one whos gotten tired of the life. He contributed to Altvariety, Chiseler, Smashpipe, and other magazines. The Towns numbers may not add up, but the atmosphere it creates seems genuinely authentic to the old Charlestown and to its proudly Irish, proudly blue-collar inhabitants. But wrapping that in the sort of candy shell of a heist movie. Beyond the flashy heists, The Townrenamed because Prince of Thieves had already been used as the subtitle of Kevin Costners version of Robin Hoodis a movie about fate, loyalty, and morality, and how those things commingle. They look at him. It eventually just blew up. Affleck: In a world of increasing homogenization, having this fresh place that I think stood out, it was appealing. We all want to drive a f----n caaar like Gloansy. Matheson: I will never forget sitting there with some felt and scissors at 3 or 4 in the morning. And well, why not nuns and tactical gear? So theres a whole range of accents. Its worth bearing in mind that these are state-wide statistics, which do not differentiate betweenneighborhoods. Hogan: I had a friend who worked at Fenway Park, who snuck me in while they were shooting that whole sequence. Claire represents the real problem at the center of the proceedings. WebBen Affleck played this real life bank robber in 'The Town'. And they led me into this little alleyway. Hall: It felt like cinema in the classic sense. They blew it up and both sides of the street, all the brick buildings were totally covered in soot. It kind of had a post-apocalyptic feeling to it. I said, Is there any way in hell that you can imagine that someone would ever rob a bank if theyre from Charlestown dressed as a nun? And the FBI agent I was meeting with turned to me and said, You know what, thats not a bad idea at all. And thats where that idea started. Heres how it works in fucking Charlestown: Youre born in Charlestown, you play fucking hockey and you rob. And I went, OK, that sums it up.. So if you give somebody a space, all they want to do is figure out how to do a heist in there. Hamm: I got to meet Pete Postlewaite, rest in peace, at the hotel bar. And we saw the film for the first time and I must say: I was across the aisle and up two or three rows from Jeremy, and I dont know if Im letting the cat out of the bag, but I think he was thrilled watching that film. Theyre both from Boston and theyre doing the whole Boston thing, and Ben being Ben, in a very playful way, tries to like, wrestle him. Its gentrified and diverse now, a local TV show host told The Christian Science Monitor. Welliver: If anything, people were kind of burned out on the New York gangster genre. Adrian had wanted to do one of my books, which was kind of unadaptable because it took place over like, 30 years. Theres so many shots and so quickly, that at the end, OK, what happened? Im mighty proud of where I come from, he says. Crockett: The Fenway heist was really just a logistical kind of clusterfuck. (His co-star John Hamm once said thatwalking around Boston with Affleck was like walking around with the mayor.) Im like, You know what, if its terrible, Ill get a great story out of it. I sit down and I watch it, and it was really bewildering. The whole reason Matt and I wanted to do Good Will Hunting was kind of as an acting reel so that we could get jobs as actors. There are three tiers of cells. When its done great its Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. He didnt want to option it himself, so they set him up with [producer] Graham King, who got the option. Bens standing there and hes doing his public relations things, and people are swarming him. But he could not have been happier to be there. Also, Starr starred in a silent movie based on his criminal activity titled A Debtor to the Law. I was cutting out pieces of felt while Gina [Rhodes] was stitching themmaking, by hand, the fake Bruins logo. He was kind of hemming and hawing a little bit and I said, Look, unless they make you wear the fucking purple outfit and the mask, you gotta do this. He went, I know.. He has that capacity, and I think that makes him a classic American filmmaker. It definitely felt like, Im getting to see something that not a lot of people get to see. Maybe its not balls; maybe cocky is the right word to describe him. Thats what makes it great. Afflecks second film as a director charts the fall of a mythic heist gang and the streets which made them. He was definitely a bad guy and was going to take as many people with him as he could, but you still kind of went, You know what, this is a kid that came along, and in a different environment he wouldve been a different person but he is a product of all of this dysfunction and horror that hes grown up in. Its brilliant. Burke: I was at a point where I was still looking for what I was gonna do with my life. The bank robbers, who were very much an element of life in the neighborhood for decades, have been gone for 15 years, replaced by a new Charlestown where gentrification has taken hold and the more accurate stereotype of the moment is: Oh, you must be a yuppie. Slaine: Im convinced my hearing is still not the same after that film. Tensions between the locals and wealthier transplants underscore the film. So we wrote parts for characters with Boston accents because we thought that was something that we could do well and that you saw done badly. Five men accused of a series of bank and armored car robberies around New England were convicted yesterday on charges that will send them to prison for life without parole. The guy that I spoke with, who was kind of our head technical adviser from the FBI, was from Nebraska. But he also liked this book by Chuck Hogan. Some residents felt it portrayed the locals as in the words of onequoted in The Christian Science Monitor, a bunch of dumb bums. The FBI says the vestibule was actually a "man-trap," designed to capture people like Hamilton. 1 hospitalized after fire in West Town, CFD says . And they walked me over to this locked door and once you opened it, there was an old, dusty cobwebby circular staircase. My father insisted that I go over. She prepped for that for God knows how long. Craig: I was a struggling crime writer. Theres something so tomb-like and archaic about Fenway. Some of the scenes were shot on the real crime locations depicted. So all of a sudden, while theyre getting married, they hear gunshots at Fenway. The FBI reports agents today arrested Anthony M. Hamilton, 24, of Charlestown, on charges he held up a Malden Citizens Bank branch in December, then shot his way out of a locked vestibule. I showed Ben the skeleton and Ben said to me, How can we make it look tougher? And I said, Why dont we put them in tactical gear? And so that started this riff, this juxtaposition of skeletons and tactical gear. Welliver: Weve got a couple of great little homages to The Friends of Eddie Coyle when theyre in Fenway: You live at such and such a street Thats completely Alex Rocco talking to the bad guy and hes saying like, We have your wife and your children are in the house. But what about in the 1980s and early 1990s? He had really bad scars. When I got there, I went up on the walkway, on the first-base side, looking down. A U.S. District Court jury delivered guilty verdicts on 54 of 55 counts, including ones charging the five in the Aug. 25, 1994, robbery in Hudson in which two How are you gonna figure this out because you want to drive an armored car out of one of our gates? He made my job easy. During the Cold War he had a great joke: The Russians wont invade Boston, theres nowhere to pahk! I thought, Yup, theres a lot of truth to that. That was our greatest hurdle. McCoy, 29, was reportedly a member of the Utah Air This week marks the 10-year anniversary of The Town, Ben Afflecks Oscar-nominated crime thriller about a group of bank robbers in Charlestown who target Fenway Park for one final score. The former bank robber-turned-aspiring-movie producer who tried to claim it is back to prison. I said, Really, Ive got to drive all the way to fucking Boston to get a meeting with you? He looked at me and went, Youre crazy. I said, No, Im not. He said, So, you really want to be in this film? I went, Yeah. And then he went, Dino? I went, Yeah. He went, OK. Crockett: I vividly remember it. Crockett: Gone Baby Gone, which I did with him, was a relatively small movie. And everyone was like, Ah, you cant, really. Or a child abduction? Crockett: He knew from the beginning that [Magloan] was gonna be Slaine. The most notorious took place outside the NFS Savings Bank in Hudson, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 1994, when an armored car pulled up shortly after 9 a.m. Burke: To go sit in the stands with Jeremy Renner in an empty stadium, it was surreal. You definitely get more of that in BPD and the local cops. I dont even think they had sidewalks. After a seven-day trial, they were I wanted to be a part of that. Afflecks Doug almost got out of his predetermined life. It was actually in the book. Chuck gets credit for that. [Adrian Lyne did not respond to a request to be interviewed for this article.]. It would go from completely quiet at 5 oclock in the morning to suddenly its like doing theater on a massive scale. 10 Patty Hearst 371K. In the 2000s, critically acclaimed, Irish Americancentered crime dramas like Clint Eastwoods Mystic River, Martin Scorseses The Departed, and Afflecks Gone Baby Gone had turned the Massachusetts capital into a Hollywood hot spot. Stockard: Ben and I went and spent a day with this FBI task force. Affleck: I had great stunt drivers. They had seen Gone Baby Gone, which opened in like sixth place to $5 million or something and wasnt seen widely. And then we put her and her cousin in the movie. Ive never felt all that interested in literally translating from book to page. We did all that kind of stuff. However, everybody will want to go see it. A long moment passes with intensity. Colin Burch (vice president of marketing and broadcasting, Boston Red Sox): We had filmed a number of movies before at Fenway, starting with Fever Pitch, and we did Ted, and RIPD, and Moneyball. But it really wasnt. Around 3 p.m., two armed men robbed the Hingham Institution for Savings on Charles Street, according to police spokeswoman Rachel McGuire. He humanized that character in that moment. The guests ran for cover. Hogan: Warner Bros. didnt want to make the movie for that amount. After managing to evade a manhunt and escape to Florida, his character says goodbye to Claire via a letter. It is because the small community adheres to omerta, silence unto death. In the history of crime, the best crew was headed by John Dillinger. Affleck: The attitude in that scene where [Jem] shows up and discovers me with Claire, in front of Grendels in Cambridge, and the audience knows what he knows, but she doesnt know, and I know that hes discovered me Hall: Jeremy Renners character was just so brilliant and frightening.
